March comes to an end after three Liga BBVA matchdays full of goals and emotion. March saw a change at the top of the table, an almighty scrap for the European places and the fight to continue playing in Liga BBVA next season. The team at LFP.es have chosen the month’s standout players who go into the team of the month.
In goal
Between the sticks is Gerónimo Rulli of Real Sociedad. The 22-year-old did not start the season as first choice given an injury he picked up last August, but after recovering he has become David Moyes's go-to goalkeeper with 13 games played. He only conceded once in March; during his side’s 3-1 win over Córdoba CF. Meanwhile, he kept clean sheets against Espanyol and Getafe.
At the back
The right back is Athletic Club's versatile Óscar de Marcos. The man from Vitoria has been key in the side’s perfect month with three wins from three games. On the other side is Marcelo Vieira, of Real Madrid. The defender’s performances in March have seen him earn a recall to the Brazil national side.
The pair in the middle of defence comprises of Gerard Piqué and Nicolás Otamendi, defenders of the league's two form sides; FC Barcelona and Valencia CF. Piqué, with four, is one of the top scoring defenders in the league this season. Meanwhile Otamendi continues to show how well he has adjusted to life in Liga BBVA. The Argentine is at the heart of the league’s second-best defence, which has shipped just 22 goals in 28 games.
It is the fifth consecutive month for Messi in the XI; Otamendi, Piqué and Marcelo also retain their places
The middle of the park
Two Sevilla players occupy the central spots: Vitolo Machín and Vicente Iborra. The Canary Islander helped seal the win versus Deportivo, scoring twice to take his tally to six for the season. A tireless worker in defence and attack, Iborra is enjoying his best time at the Andalusian club, playing 17 times and scoring three goals.
Alongside the Sevilla duo is Sergio Canales of Real Sociedad. The Cantabrian, who has seen his career marred by injury previously, has found his home in San Sebastián. Of the 28 games played thus far in Liga BBVA, he has taken part in 27; 11 more than last season, which was his first with the 'txuri-urdin'.
Up top
The attacking trident consists of Leo Messi, Aritz Aduriz and Alberto Bueno. The Argentine star is the top scorer in Liga BBVA, and found the back of the net five times in March; three times against Rayo Vallecano and twice versus SD Eibar. Meanwhile the Athletic Club forward Aritz Aduriz stood out in wins over Real Madrid and RC Celta.
For the second consecutive month Alberto Bueno is part of the XI chosen by LFP.es LFP.es. The Rayo Vallecano forward is the leading Spanish goalscorer with 15 strikes; three of which were scored in March. He also became the club's record goalscorer in a season after reaching 26 in all competitions.
