Sevilla FC kicked off Saturday’s action in the Liga BBVA with a 2-0 win over Athletic Club. Both goals were scored inside the opening 20 minutes of the game and brought an end to Athletic’s impressive run of win consecutive wins.

The game began in exciting fashion as Aleix Vidal pounced on an ill-judged sprint out of his area by Gorka Iraizoz to slot into an empty net with less than three minutes on the clock.

The visitors went on to dominate the opening 20 minutes and soon added to their lead. The goalscorer this time was Carlos Bacca, who hit his 17th goal of the league season. Athletic, lead by Óscar de Marcos, then sought to get themselves back in the game and created a couple of dangerous moments, but could not find the target.

The intensity dropped in the second half, especially from Sevilla, who had played exceptionally well in the opening 45 minutes. There were scarce goalscoring chances for either side after the break. Iñaki Williams tried his luck in the 72nd minute with a distance effort which Sergio Rico had to tip round the post for a corner, and the young custodian then made another fine save a few minutes later, this time keeping out a volley from Beñat. This result leaves Sevilla just outside the Champions League places, in fifth with 58 points. Athletic are eighth in the table with 39 points.
