Following their UEFA Europa League clashes, Villarreal CF and Sevilla FC come face to face once more on matchday 28 of the Liga BBVA. The visitors again claimed victory (0-2), a result that leaves Unai Emery’s team in fifth position with 55 points. Defeat for Marcelino García Toral’s men, who sit sixth on 49 points, sees them lose ground on the Andalusians in the table.

There was little to choose between the teams in the first half. After 24 minutes, Carlos Bacca had the first clear chance of the encounter when he got on the end of a terrific cross from Coke, but his effort was stopped by a good save from Sergio Asenjo. Villarreal’s two best opportunities came in the final stages of the opening 45. The first, on 35 minutes, came about as great link-up play from the hosts led to a low cross from Giovani dos Santos that was met by Joel Campbell, with Nico Pareja clearing from under the posts. The second, five minutes later, saw Moi Gómez’s attempt hit the left-hand upright.

With the second half only just underway, Sevilla opened the scoring. A counter-attack from the away side culminated in a great backheeled assist from Diogo Figueiras for Coke to beat Asenjo one on one. Marcelino’s charges sought to level the match but were unable to trouble Sergio Rico, and Sevilla doubled their lead when Vitolo connected with a Coke cross to fire in to Asenjo’s left. The goal proved a hammer blow for the home team, who still had time to be denied by the post from another Gómez shot, as the match finished 0-2.
