It was a hard-fought victory for RCD Espanyol in their last match of the year against Rayo Vallecano. Sergio Gonzálezs side claimed a 1-3 win on Matchday 16 of the Liga BBVA, leaving them in the safe zone and piling more pressure on the Madrid side, who have failed to win in three rounds.

A mistake between the defence and goalkeeper put Rayo behind nine minutes into the game. The ever-alert Sergio García took advantage of the mishap and put the Catalan side ahead, and his team kept Paco Jémez's side at bay for the entire first half with hard work and pressure. However, the Vallecas club hit back just before the break through a Leo Baptistão goal, scored off a cross from Gaël Kakuta.

In the second half Rayo came out all guns blazing and took control of the midfield, with more ideas than the visitors. Alberto Bueno and Álex Moreno threatened Kiko Casilla's area, but when the Madrid side looked like taking the lead, a move from Espanyol’s Sergio García led to their second goal scored by Lucas Vázquez. The goal that made it 1-3 came in added time through man-of-the-match Sergio García.
