Villarreal CF overcame Getafe CF 2-1 on matchday 12 of the Liga BBVA. For the Yellows it meant getting back to winning ways after a four-round dry spell, retaining their eighth place with 18 points. Cosmin Contra’s men, meanwhile, remain in the safe zone despite the defeat.

Getafe were more switched on in the opening stages of the encounter but as the game progressed the home side regained control of the match and were more accurate in front of goal. Mario was the first to beat Vicente Guaita, off a good pass from Luciano Vietto. Five minutes later, in the 43rd, Gerard Moreno hit a low strike to make it 2-0, tipping the game in favour of Marcelino García Toral’s team just before the break.

But Getafe did not give up and they closed the gap in the early stages of the second half, getting themselves back into the game. Mehdi Lacen finished off a back pass from his team-mate Jorge Sammir, restoring hope to his side. Míchel had an attempt from in front of the area but Sergio Asenjo cleared what could have been the equaliser. Despite the persistence of the Madrid side in the final stages, the Yellows got back to winning ways in front of their home crowd after a dry spell lasting four rounds.
