Athletic Club and SD Eibar drew 0-0 on matchday 6 of the Liga BBVA. Ernesto Valverde’s men have now gone four games without a win, while the Armeros are continuing to make a fine impression in the top flight of Spanish football.
The visitors started with a great deal of intensity, standing up to an Athletic that gradually improved during the first half. Saúl Berjón, one of Gaizka Garitano’s top performers, had the first chance for the Armeros off a pass from Eneko Bóveda, but he was out of luck in front of goal. The Rojiblancos attempted to create danger in the opposition area, but neither Aritz Aduriz nor Aymeric Laporte, who had the two best chances for the home side, were able to surprise the Armero defence.
After the break it was more of the same: Athletic looked to take control, but were unable to get past an organised Gipuzkoan side. The 5th minute of the second half was not over before Borja Viguera, free of his marker, struck a ball that went over Xabi Irureta’s goal. Aduriz had another attempt, but Eiber responded with a good run from Ander Capa who missed with his shot. Neither team gave up in the final minutes. The San Mamés crowd cheered on their team, who had several incursions into the opposition area, but Eibar held out and managed to claim a valuable point in Bilbao.
