Atlético Madrid beat Getafe CF 2-0 in Saturday's opening matchday 28 clash in the Liga BBVA. Courtesy of goals from Fernando Torres and Tiago Mendes, los rojiblancos got back to winning ways to move to within one point of third-place Valencia CF. Loz azulones, meanwhile, remain provisionally in 13th position.
The hosts could not have got off to a better start to the match, taking the lead with just three minutes played. Koke sent in a fantastic free-kick to set up Torres, who scored for the first time in the Liga BBVA this season with an unstoppable header. Getafe were unfazed by the early goal and put in a battling display throughout the first half. However, Tiago extended Atlético’s advantage after 44 minutes, taking full advantage of a Raúl Jiménez flick-on from another Koke dead-ball delivery.
The tempo and the number of chances dropped in a second half that saw Diego Simeone's men continue to dominate possession as they enjoyed the comfort of their two-goal cushion. Getafe had an opportunity to cut the deficit with a Sergio Escudero drive that was saved by Jan Oblak, but proved unable to break down an excellent Atlético defence and the three points stayed at the Estadio Vicente Calderón.
