Atlético impose themselves in the Madrid derby game

Atlético Madrid sit in third place in the Liga BBVA following their 4-0 victory against Real Madrid on matchday 22 of the Liga BBVA. The Rojiblancos had not beaten their city rivals at home in the Liga BBVA since 1999 (3-1).

The home side brought an onslaught of play in the first half and went 2-0 up on the scoreboard not even 20 minutes into the game. Tiago Mendes opened the scoring with a strike from the edge of the area that went under Iker Casillas, before Saúl Ñíguez got the fans in the Vicente Calderón on their feet with a great bicycle kick. Real Madrid reacted by increasing pressure and attacks on the wings but they were unable to beat the goalkeeper Miguel Ángel Moyá.

Despite Carlo Ancelotti’s changes in the second half, the game’s dynamic did not change and the Rojiblancos sealed the win with another goal that ended the hopes of a comeback from Real Madrid. Antoine Griezmann netted the third goal, by making good use of a precision pass from Sául. Finally, with one minute left on the clock, Mario Mandžukić finished off the home win, leaving the result at 4-0.
