Atlético carry on where they left off

Atlético Madrid started the year as they finished it, with Antoine Griezmann proving the difference between them and their opponents. This time it was Levante who were made to pay by the Frenchman, whose double secured the Rojiblancos all three points on matchday 17 of Liga BBVA.

Diego Simeone's men were comfortable from the off, creating chances against their opponents who were content to sit back and soak up the pressure. After a number of missed chances, the home side opened the scoring through Griezmann, who headed home after 18 minutes.

The opening moments of the second half followed suit, and Atleti scored again. Another header from the Frenchman made it 2-0, however this brought Levante to life. A set play brought about a scramble, which led to Nabil El Zhar halving the deficit. While Lucas Alcaraz's men fought valiantly to level things up, Atlético sealed the three points thanks to another header, this time from Diego Godín.
