Atlético back to their best in the Nuevo Arcángel

A Griezmann strike and a training ground header by Saúl were enough to beat Córdoba in their ground.

Atlético de Madrid came out of matchday 29 of the Liga BBVA three points to the good and with their unbeaten streak of games extended to six straight weeks. The euphoria of Diego Pablo Simeone's players starkly contrasted with the mood surround the Córdoba CF team who, after losing 0-2 in the Nuevo Arcángel to los rojiblancos, remain rooted to the bottom of the table, with just 18 points to their name.

Antoine Griezmann only needed five minutes to notch up his fifteenth goal of this season’s La Liga campaign and open the visitors' account for the evening. The first goal of the game reflected what went on during the 90 minutes of play. An ever-persistent Atlético side, eager to put pressure on the ball, latched onto a Córdoba mistake and made the most of the opportunity after the French forward robbed possession off the Andalusian defence. Saúl Ñíguez doubled the Madrid team’s lead in the 39' with an unstoppable header coming straight out of the training ground manual.

José Antonio Romero's charges, who struggled to get into the game during the first half, tried to rectify matters after the break, but it was already too late by that stage. Atlético were compact at the back and continued to put pressure on the ball in the middle of the park, however, the home side still managed to cause a few panicky moments through Bebé and Adrián Gunino. Despite the Andalusians’ best efforts, they were unable to narrow the gap, and now must wait until the next matchday to begin their climb towards safety.
