Athletic's run continues

Athletic Club saw off RC Celta 1-2 in Saturday's final Liga BBVA matchday 27 clash. Courtesy of strikes from Aritz Aduriz and Mikel San José, the Basque outfit picked up their fourth consecutive victory in the top flight to sit in eighth place; Joaquín Larrivey replied for the Galicians, who drop to tenth.

It was Celta who threatened the opposition goal in the game's early stages, with a lively Álex López trying his luck against Gorka Iraizoz on two occasions. However, Athletic drew first blood, Aduriz converting from the penalty spot after 17 minutes. The goal spurred the away team on and they continued to put pressure on Celta, getting their reward with a second as San José snapped up a loose ball in the area to beat Sergio Álvarez and make it 0-2.

The second half began with a major setback for Athletic as Aduriz was forced off through injury. Celta then reduced the deficit through a good Larrivey header from Fabián Orellana’s cross, fuelling home hopes of a comeback. But despite Athletic going down to ten men after San José’s sending-off on 84’, the match ended in a 1-2 triumph for Ernesto Valverde’s side.
