Athletic continued their fine run of recent rounds with their 1-2 defeat of Getafe CF at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez on matchday 13 of the Liga BBVA. The Madrid side were searching for the equaliser in injury time, but Ernesto Valverde’s men held on for their sixth straight game unbeaten.
Getafe allowed the Rojiblancos to have all the possession in the first half, and Athletic took advantage of their dominance to lay down the law. Mikel San José shrewdly got on the end of a corner and headed a ball into the back of the net. Though the home side had little success in attack and went into the break behind, they did offer their best defensive display of recent months with an accurate Sergio Escudero and hard-working Naldo.
It was end-to-end stuff in the second half, making it an open encounter in which Getafe pushed hard and had more chances. Particularly in added time, when Athletic thought they had the match in the bag after Beñat made it 0-2 in the 89th minute from a direct free kick. It was Ángel Lafita who closed the gap in the 91st minute and made it an exciting end to the game, but in the end Athletic went away from the Coliseum with a valuable three points.
