Aduriz takes on the role of hero at the San Mamés

Athletic Club beat Rayo Vallecano by 1-0 in a game being played on matchday 24 of the Liga BBVA. Thanks to a goal from Aduriz in the final stretch of the game, Athletic took three vital points which temporarily at least, mean that they are 12th in the table. The Madrid side drop to 14th place.

The match began frenetically, non-stop action with both teams seeking out the rival’s goal from the outset. Athletic gave the first warnings and on two occasions, with Aritz Aduriz and Unai López failing to trouble the goalkeeper Toño Rodríguez. Gaël Kakuta was the visitor’s most active and incisive player thanks to his speed and endless energy on the left-hand side.

The game continued to be very open after the half-time break. Whilst Athletic tried their luck again from the edge of the box, this time with a wayward shot from Mikel Rico, Rayo bet upon a three man defence to try and take three points from the San Mamés. Finally, when everything seemed to point to a draw, Aduriz took on the role of hero to score the decisive goal in the 86th minute.
